Acupuncture Newington

Acupuncture is a safe and effective treatment that helps in the management of many conditions. At NDPE we offer quality care including acupuncture for local residents in West Ryde and surrounding areas such as Eastwood, Denistone, Epping, and Ryde.

What Is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture, an integral part of Chinese medicine, has been practised for over 5,000 years and has gained significant recognition as a holistic and natural approach to healthcare in the Western world. It is embraced by millions of individuals worldwide.

The primary aim of inserting acupuncture needles is to restore and rebalance the flow of energy, or Qi, within the body. Traditional Chinese medicine views the body as a complex network of interconnected meridians through which Qi flows. When there is an imbalance or blockage in the flow of Qi, it is thought to manifest as physical or emotional symptoms. By strategically inserting needles at specific acupuncture points along these meridians, acupuncturists aim to regulate the Qi and promote its smooth and harmonious circulation.

During acupuncture, small and fine needles are gently inserted into the skin to stimulate the nerves and tissues. This process encourages the affected area to heal and relieve tension, stress, and discomfort. It is important to understand that acupuncture is typically not painful. You may experience a mild sensation of dullness or a slight tingle, but many patients find the experience to be calm and relaxing.

What should you be prepared for during your acupuncture session?

During your initial appointment, we will conduct a thorough assessment to determine whether acupuncture may be beneficial for you and discuss your treatment plan and goals with you.

Your acupuncture session will last between 20 and 40 minutes. During your acupuncture sessions, you will lie down while one of our physiotherapists gently inserts the thin needles into your specific points to stimulate the nerves under the skin’s surface. We ensure the acupuncture process remains sterile by using sterile, single-use acupuncture needles.

Your Acupuncture Questions Answered

What can I expect in terms of sensation during acupuncture?

Acupuncture is often perceived as a painful treatment due to the use of needles. However, acupuncture needles are designed to be as thin and delicate as possible to minimise any discomfort. The needles used in acupuncture are significantly finer than those used for injections or blood tests, and they are carefully inserted into specific points on the body. Most people describe the sensation as a mild tingling, warmth, or dull ache at the site of insertion. It is rare for acupuncture to cause significant pain. If any discomfort is experienced during the treatment, it is usually temporary and subsides quickly.

Are there any risks or side effects associated with acupuncture?

When performed by an experienced therapist, such as our physiotherapists at NDPE, acupuncture is a very well-tolerated treatment for a range of conditions. We use sterile needles in accordance with stringent Australian standards to ensure your health and safety. Acupuncture that is performed improperly can result in adverse reactions, so it is important to choose an acupuncturist who is qualified and experienced.

Should I take rest or avoid any activities after an acupuncture session?

To maximise the benefits of acupuncture, it is recommended to rest and give your body time to integrate the treatment. While you may engage in light activities right after your session, it is advisable to avoid strenuous exercise and alcohol for a few hours. Acupuncture has a relaxing effect, and you may feel pleasantly sleepy afterwards. It’s important to be aware of this potential effect and plan your schedule accordingly, especially for your initial session.
