Acupuncture North Ryde
Acupuncture is a safe and effective treatment that helps in the management of many conditions. At NDPE we offer quality care including acupuncture for local residents in West Ryde and surrounding areas such as Eastwood, Denistone, Epping, and Ryde.
What Is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture, an integral part of Chinese medicine, has been practised for over 5,000 years and has gained significant recognition as a holistic and natural approach to healthcare in the Western world. It is embraced by millions of individuals worldwide.
The primary aim of inserting acupuncture needles is to restore and rebalance the flow of energy, or Qi, within the body. Traditional Chinese medicine views the body as a complex network of interconnected meridians through which Qi flows. When there is an imbalance or blockage in the flow of Qi, it is thought to manifest as physical or emotional symptoms. By strategically inserting needles at specific acupuncture points along these meridians, acupuncturists aim to regulate the Qi and promote its smooth and harmonious circulation.
Acupuncture involves gently placing small, fine needles into the skin to stimulate nerves and tissues, encouraging the affected area to heal and relieving tension, stress, and discomfort. This is not a painful process, though you may feel a dull sensation or a slight tingle. Many patients find it a calm and relaxing experience.

During your acupuncture session, which usually lasts between 20 and 40 minutes, you will lie down in a relaxed position. Our highly trained physiotherapists will gently insert fine needles into specific acupuncture points on your body, targeting the underlying nerves beneath the skin’s surface. Rest assured that we prioritise your health by using sterile, disposable acupuncture needles.

Acupuncture: Your Questions Answered
Does acupuncture hurt?
Concerns about pain during acupuncture are understandable, given the association of needles with discomfort. However, acupuncture needles are incredibly thin and designed for minimal sensation. The needles are typically inserted gently and smoothly, resulting in a generally painless experience. While individual responses to acupuncture may vary, many patients find the process relaxing and soothing. It’s worth noting that any minor bruising or small spots of blood that may occur at the needle insertion site are usually harmless and temporary. Rest assured that acupuncture is known for its gentle approach and is widely regarded as a comfortable therapy.
Is acupuncture considered a safe treatment?
When performed by an experienced therapist, such as our physiotherapists at NDPE, acupuncture is a very well-tolerated treatment for a range of conditions. We use sterile needles in accordance with stringent Australian standards to ensure your health and safety. Acupuncture that is performed improperly can result in adverse reactions, so it is important to choose an acupuncturist who is qualified and experienced.
Should I take rest or avoid any activities after an acupuncture session?
After your acupuncture session, it is advisable to take some time to rest and allow your body to fully benefit from the treatment. While you are able to resume light activities immediately, it is best to avoid vigorous exercise and alcohol for a few hours. Acupuncture has a calming effect on the body, and it is not uncommon to feel sleepy afterwards. We recommend considering this and planning accordingly for your first session.
