Heel Pain Treatment West Ryde

heel pain west rydeBeing on your feet all day is no laughing matter. By the end of the day your back, heels and feet ache, and there’s usually no rest when you return home either. The moment you walk through the door, there are kids to feed and chores to be done. Before you know it, the alarm sounds and it’s time to start the day again—on your feet!

Sound familiar? Have you seen a physiotherapist to help treat and assess your heel pain?

What is Heel Pain?

Heel pain is a common foot problem; often caused by pain usually under the heel or behind it where the Achilles tendon connects to the heel bone. Heel pain can often be caused by a stress fracture, tendinopathy, arthritis or nerve irritation.

Causes of Heel Pain:

Heel Pain can be caused by overuse or persistent strain. The most common causes of heel pain include carrying too much bodyweight and excessive walking or running.

Other common causes of heel pain include:

Plantar fasciitis: Plantar fasciitis occurs when there is inflammation of the plantar fascia; a thick fibrous band of connective tissues starting from the bottom of your heel bone, extending along the sole of the foot towards the toes. It is a condition affecting the ligaments in the soles of the feet that cause pain in both the heel and arch.

Achilles Tendinopathy: Achilles tendinopathy, literally meaning inflammation of the Achilles tendon, results in pain and sometimes swelling around the back of the heel.  This often leads to extremely tight calf muscles, and pain upon walking.

Treatment For Heel Pain:

At NDPE all our physiotherapists are experienced in diagnosing and treating heel pain. Our team will work with you to understand you pain and symptoms through a thorough personalised assessment. We can then provide you with a tailored treatment plan to correctly manage your condition.

Some of our treatment methods may include:

Exercises: Strengthening exercises for your foot and calf muscles can help improve the functionality of your foot and joints.

Dry Needling: Trigger Point Needling is an evidence-based form of treatment for acute and chronic pain which is similar to acupuncture for pain. Very thin needles are inserted into painful, tight and swollen areas to help reduce pain.

Orthotics: Orthotics, also known as orthoses are the correctional devices used to address and correct an individual’s foot and ankle problems without the need for surgery.  Our team use GaitScanTM these are customised to each person, as the biomechanics and need for them differs amongst people.
