Sinding-Larsen-Johansson Syndrome in West Ryde

  • Is your child complaining of pain at the bottom of their kneecap?
  • Does this worsen with running and jumping activities?
  • Has your child been unable to compete at their best ability due to pain?

Your child may be suffering from Sinding-Larsen-Johansson Syndrome…

What is Sinding-Larsen-Johansson Syndrome?

It is a painful knee condition seen within the adolescent population, which is most prominent during the period of rapid growth. During this period, the thighbone increases its length, placing increased tension on muscles connected to the thighbone.

Increased tension places an excessive force on the bottom of the kneecap, where it connects to the patella tendon, as seen in this photo. The condition will worsen with high levels of physical activity, and possibly stop your child performing at their best ability.

If left untreated, symptoms can last for many months, and your child may be at risk of missing sport, and physical activity. Not to mention the ongoing pain within the knee.

Who’s at risk?

  • Children between 8 – 15 years of age.

How to fix the problem?

Rest

  • Your child’s Physiotherapist can make modifications to physical activity to reduce the pain within the knee.
  • Allowing adequate rest will reduce the risk of worsening the problem, and also allow the injury to heal.

Manual Therapy

  • Release to the thigh muscle can help to decrease the tension within the front of the knee. The release helps to lengthen the muscle, resulting in a decrease in pain.
  • Stretching exercises will also be beneficial to reduce the tension within the knee.
  • A guided physiotherapy rehabilitation program for your child’s knee is also essential to ensure they do not have ongoing issues for the future.

Taping

  • Specific taping for the knee can also to reduce the pain within the knee.
