What Is Shockwave Therapy & Does It Work?
Also known as radial shockwave therapy or extracorporeal shockwave therapy is a strong but painless way to treat sports injuries and other lingering injuries. This ultrasound therapy is an effective and non-invasive way to treat painful conditions of your muscles, bones, nerves, and musculoskeletal connective tissue.
Shockwave regenerative therapy (ESWT) is a form of orthopedic and sports rehabilitative treatment for both injury and chronic pain. The treatment consists of soundwave pulses delivered via external handheld tools. Thanks to decades of success and proven safety, it’s becoming a standard procedure that speeds healing for many patients.
The radial shockwaves produced from the applicator break the association between pain and muscular and vascular tone through the strong stimuli it produces. By ‘rebooting’ the healing process this is highly effective for long standing tendinopathies, fasciopathies, myofascial trigger points and activation of muscle and connective tissue for increased circulation.
Does It Work?
Extracorporeal shock wave therapy has been used as an effective treatment for a variety of pain conditions for over 20 years. There have been many studies proving that is more effective than other therapies for healing tendons and ligaments.
Some of these cases include:
- In this study of 30 patients with frozen shoulder, 15 received and 15 received a placebo treatment. The first group reported a significant decrease in pain and improvement of frozen shoulder symptoms.
- Shockwave Therapy used for patients with shoulder tendonitis, these people reported reduced pain in 85% of cases
- Patients with hip tendonitis received shockwave therapy, with 79% of them reporting reduced pain and inflammation.
What Can Shockwave Therapy Treat?
Shockwave regenerative treatment is used for a broad range of musculoskeletal issues, especially for:
