Osgood-Schlatter Disease – Why It Occurs And How To Treat It

Osgood-Schlatter Disease Treatment West RydeOsgood-Schlatter Disease is a condition experienced by growing adolescents, characterised by pain and inflammation just below the knee. The affected area is the meeting of the patellar tendon (commonly referred to as the kneecap) and the tibia (the shinbone). Northern Districts Physiotherapy and Sports Clinic provide quality physio care to children and teenagers experiencing injury or pain.

During growth spurts, rapid changes occur to muscles, tendons and bones. Children who participate in sport and athletics also place additional stress on their growing bodies, making the condition more common in active kids. Children and teens who do not play sports, however, may also develop this problem.

Why does Osgood-Schlatter Disease occur?

A growth plate is an area of bone only present in children which solidifies with age. These plates of cartilage are located near the end of the bone and some act as attachment locations for tendons.

In the knee, the tibial tubercle (a small bump of bone) covers the growth plate near the tibia. This is attached to the quadriceps, a group of muscles at the front of the thigh. When active, this muscle group puts pressure on the patellar tendon, which leads to pulling of the tibial tubercle.

This repetitive action can lead to inflammation and pain. In some children, the apparent bump of the tibial tubercle may also become more prominent and pronounced.

How Can Osgood-Schlatter Disease Be Treated?

Osgood-Schlatter Disease is often apparent through pain exacerbated by sport activities. Running and jumping can particularly worsen symptoms. Pain and tenderness, swelling and muscle tightness around the knee are all indications of the condition.

If you believe your child may be experiencing symptoms of Osgood-Schlatter Disease, contact Northern Districts Physiotherapy and Sports Clinic and book an appointment with an experienced healthcare professional.
