What are Orthotics Meadowbank?

Orthotics, known as orthoses, are corrective tools used to address and rectify foot and ankle problems in individuals without the need for surgery. These are customised for each person since the biomechanics and requirements differ among individuals. They can improve and assist your foot’s function to reduce the pain you once experienced. Orthotics modify the pressure on certain parts of your feet and are tailor-made from the scans of your feet taken by the GaitScan™.

How Can Orthotics Help You?

Orthotics Meadowbank can be used in the treatment of:

What is GaitScanTM

Orthotics Meadowbank

GaitScanTM, a powerful tool utilised by our physiotherapists to identify any irregularities in foot function. It conducts a comprehensive analysis of a patient’s foot biomechanics, generating precise images that help determine whether orthotics are necessary. When you stand on the state-of-the-art metal plate, it captures the shape of your foot using over 4000 sensors, operating at an astonishing scan rate of up to 300 frames per second.

Should orthotics be hard or soft?

Custom Orthotics Meadowbank The experience of wearing your orthotics will be based on your individual circumstances and several factors. Your physiotherapist will have a conversation with you to determine the most suitable option. As a quick summary:

Soft (ethyl vinyl acetate, EVA) orthotics:

  • Provide more padding
  • Are easy to modify
  • Are less likely to rub and cause blisters

Hard (polypropelene) orthotics:

  • Last longer
  • Influence the foot better
  • Fit more easily into fashion footwear or casual shoes

Should orthotics hurt at the beginning?

Just like trying anything new, there can be an adjustment period when it comes to orthotics. They might feel a bit uncomfortable initially, especially in the case of hard orthotics, which may require a gradual break-in period. However, they should not cause pain. If you’re still experiencing discomfort even after breaking them in, please don’t hesitate to inform us—we’re here to assist with any necessary adjustments.

Are orthotics meant to be worn at all times?

Upon receiving your custom orthotics, your body will require an adjustment period. The initial step involves a gradual wearing-in process, which typically spans two to four weeks. Your physiotherapist will provide you with specific guidance based on your needs and circumstances; however, here’s a general outline: Day 1: Wear your custom orthotics for 30 minutes at a time, two to three times during the day. Day 2: Extend each wear by an additional 30 minutes. Day 3: Add another 30 minutes to each wear on top of the previous day. Continue increasing the duration by 30-minute intervals daily over the next few weeks. Remove them during strenuous activities until they’re fully broken in.

Are custom orthotics worth it? Are custom orthotics worth the money?

In one word: absolutely! Your feet support the weight of your body day in and day out, and they should be allowed to feel and function at their best. If your physiotherapist suggests custom orthotics, wearing them as prescribed will result in reduced discomfort and a lowered risk of injuries. They are unquestionably a valuable investment in your physical health and, consequently, your mental well-being.

Are orthotics good for plantar fasciitis?

Plantar fasciitis affects the way your feet move when you stand and walk, and so the associated pain may be alleviated with the use of custom orthotics. Custom orthotics aim to restore your feet’s mechanics, relieving stress on the plantar fascia, which is the band of tissue running from your heel to the bottom of your toes. Therefore, custom orthotics may play a significant role in your overall treatment plan.
