What is Clinical Pilates?

Clinical Pilates is a form of exercise that aims to increase flexibility and strength, and is helpful in improving posture and overall health. Clinical Pilates is often used by patients recovering from an injury, as it helps to stimulate muscles that have been dormant throughout the patient’s injury.

Clinical Pilates takes each individual’s health, injuries, and overall wellbeing into account to create a personalised workout. Based on the principle of stabilising, it involves coordinating breathing while moving your upper and lower extremities through a range of motions. Clinical Pilates is sui

table for people of all ages and fitness levels, and is a safe exercise during pregnancy.

Why Choose NDPE West Ryde?

At NDPE, we offer small group Clinical Pilates classes that incorporate reformer Pilates. Reformer Pilates is done via a Pilates reformer machine, a flat frame that rolls back and forth on wheels to assist in creating proper muscle strength. This makes reformer Pilates an excellent option for people looking to strengthen their core, along with all types athletes, from ballet dancers to football players.

If you are not currently receiving treatment, one of our physiotherapists will provide an assessment to determine the best Clinical Pilates treatment for you. Our Clinical Pilates classes are run by our team of physiotherapists, with a maximum of 4 people to a class. These small classes allow for more individualised attention and care, so that you get the most out of your Clinical Pilates experience. We proudly support the care of patients in West Ryde and the surrounding suburbs of Eastwood, Epping, Denistone, Marsfield and Carlingford.

Your Clinical Pilates Questions Answered

What is a reformer in Pilates?

A reformer is a piece of equipment that lies flat and low to the ground, and comes equipped with springs, straps, and adjustable bars. Your instructor will guide you through movements using the machine which allows you to exercise horizontally as opposed to vertically, reducing weight bearing on the legs.

What are the benefits of Reformer Pilates?

Reformer Pilates comes with a whole host of benefits, assisting to increase both physical and mental health. Reformer Pilates:

  • Builds strength
  • Improves core and posture
  • Reduces aches and pains
  • Improves breathing
  • Enhances physical performance
  • Tones muscles
  • Reduces risk of injury
  • Improves balance and stability
  • Increases flexibility
  • Strengthens abdominal and pelvic floor muscles

Is Reformer Pilates better than Clinical Pilates?

Reformer Pilates offers additional and unique benefits that may not be achievable in Clinical Pilates performed on a yoga mat. While mat work in Clinical Pilates encourages you to use your body weight to provide resistance, reformer Pilates helps your body into proper form while adding resistance through the springs. With this added assistance, you have access to a wider variety of exercises in order to build strength and improve mobility.

Some patients, such as those in their third trimester of pregnancy or people with spinal or neck issues, may not be suitable for reformer Pilates. Patients should seek advice from their doctor before starting an exercise program.

Can you lose weight doing Reformer Pilates?

Weight loss is not the core goal of reformer Pilates, although any form of exercise may assist with weight loss. Instead, patients use reformer Pilates for rehabilitation, strength, and health reasons to reduce pain or enhance mobility and flexibility. At NDPE we focus on these aspects as a measure of success, rather than centimetres and kilograms.

Is Reformer Pilates hard?

Your exercises will be tailored specifically to you, so that no exercise is beyond your capabilities. Over time, your strength and endurance will increase, enabling you to perform exercises you previously couldn’t.

Can you do Reformer Pilates at home?

Reformer Pilates can only be done with a reformer machine. As such, you would need your own reformer machine in order to do reformer Pilates at home. These are available for purchase, however it’s best to purchase a commercial quality machine which come at a significant cost.

How long does it take to see results from Reformer Pilates?

Each individual’s body and experience is unique, and as such there is no specific timeframe for expected results. For a customised plan, visit our NDPE clinic today.
