It is a well-suited option for individuals aiming to strengthen their core stability and proves beneficial for athletes across a diverse range of sports, including ballet dancers and football players.

What is Clinical Pilates?

Clinical Pilates is a form of exercise that aims to increase flexibility and strength and improve posture and overall health. Clinical Pilates is often used by people who are recovering from an injury or dealing with a chronic medical condition as it helps to stimulate muscles that have become weak or tight.

Our dedicated physiotherapists at NDPE who conduct our clinical Pilates classes prioritise the individual needs of each participant. By considering personal health, injuries, and overall well-being, they curate personalised workouts tailored to specific requirements. Following the principle of stabilisation, these programs encompass synchronised breathing techniques while engaging both the upper and lower extremities in a range of controlled movements. Clinical Pilates is a versatile exercise option suitable for individuals of all ages and fitness levels, including expectant mothers as it is deemed safe during pregnancy.

Which Health Conditions Can Be Improved Through Clinical Pilates?

A variety of issues and circumstances may be addressed through Clinical Pilates, such as:

What Is Reformer Pilates?

Reformer Pilates offers additional and unique benefits that may not be achievable in Pilates which is performed on a yoga mat. While mat work encourages you to use your body weight to provide resistance, reformer Pilates promotes proper form while adding resistance using adjustable springs. With this added assistance, you have access to a wider variety of exercises to build strength and improve mobility.

The reformer is a piece of equipment used in reformer Pilates. It is a flat and low-to-the-ground apparatus that features springs, straps, and adjustable bars. With the guidance of your physiotherapist, you will perform movements using the reformer, which allows for horizontal exercise instead of vertical. This horizontal position helps reduce weight-bearing on the legs, making it a suitable option for individuals with certain conditions or limitations. The reformer is a unique equipment utilised in reformer Pilates. It is a flat and close-to-the-ground apparatus that incorporates springs, straps, and adjustable bars. During your reformer Pilates session, your physiotherapist will lead you through a series of movements using the machine. Unlike traditional exercises that are performed vertically, the reformer enables horizontal exercise, which minimises weight-bearing on the legs. This aspect is particularly beneficial for individuals who need reduced stress or impact on their lower body.

Some patients, such as those in their third trimester of pregnancy or individuals with spinal or neck issues, may not be suitable for reformer Pilates. Patients should consult their doctor before commencing an exercise program.

Experience the best of both worlds with our reformer Pilates classes led by our skilled physiotherapists. These classes blend the clinical principles of Pilates with the use of reformer machines, taking your workouts to the next level. The advantage of attending our classes is that they are supervised and delivered by qualified professionals, making them eligible for potential health fund claims.

What Conditions Can Reformer Pilates Help With?

There are several conditions that Reformer Pilates may potentially assist with, including:

  • Neck and shoulder pain
  • Injury prevention
  • Postnatal recovery
  • Chronic fatigue
  • Osteoporosis
  • Orthostatic Intolerance

Who can benefit from Clinical and Reformer Pilates?

All forms of Pilates may be highly beneficial for people of all ages and varying lifestyles. For older adults, Pilates often aims to improve balance, stability, and posture, helping to prevent falls and maintain independence. It can also offer a low-impact option for those with joint issues or injuries. For younger people, Pilates provides a well-rounded workout that targets both strength and flexibility, enhancing overall fitness and helping to prevent common musculoskeletal imbalances.

It’s a great exercise for individuals with physical limitations who seek a supported and gentle activity that aims to yield results. One notable advantage of reformer Pilates is the reduced stress on joints, as most of the exercises can be performed in a lying or sitting position.

Our qualified and experienced physiotherapists will develop a personalised program for you that takes in your abilities, requirements and goals, will guide you through each exercise, and will make adjustments when needed.

In what ways do Physiotherapy and Exercise Pilates vary from each other?

Clinical Pilates and exercise Pilates differ primarily in their objectives and application. Clinical Pilates is a form of Pilates supervised by qualified professionals, such as our physiotherapists. It is commonly recommended as part of a rehabilitation program to target specific injuries, musculoskeletal conditions, or postural issues. Clinical Pilates emphasises personalised assessment, targeted exercises, and customised modifications to address the individual needs and limitations of each participant.

In contrast, exercise Pilates, also known as traditional or mat Pilates, takes a more broad approach and is commonly available in fitness studios or group classes. It focuses on enhancing overall strength, flexibility, and body conditioning through a series of exercises that often involve a mat or equipment like resistance bands. Exercise Pilates aims to improve physical fitness, core strength, posture, and overall body awareness without specifically addressing individual injuries or medical conditions.

While clinical Pilates and exercise Pilates have foundational principles and movements in common, clinical Pilates takes a more individualised and therapeutic approach. It is tailored to address specific health concerns and conditions, providing targeted exercises and modifications. On the other hand, exercise Pilates has a broader focus on overall fitness and well-being, offering a general approach to improving strength, flexibility, and body conditioning.

  • Enhances core and posture

What factors should be considered when choosing between reformer Pilates and clinical Pilates?

Reformer Pilates offers a range of unique benefits that may not be easily attainable through clinical Pilates performed on a yoga mat. While mat work often serves its purpose and caters to the needs of many individuals, reformer Pilates aims to provide increased support and the ability to make precise adjustments.

How many people will be in my class?

NDPE provides reformer exercise classes in small groups, ensuring a personalised approach to each participant. This focus on individualisation promotes proper technique and enables participants to make the most out of their time in class. To maintain quality instruction, class sizes are limited to a maximum of 4 individuals and are led by qualified physiotherapists.

Can practising Reformer Pilates aid with achieving weight loss goals?

Weight loss is not the core goal of reformer Pilates, although any form of exercise may assist with weight loss. Reformer Pilates is typically used for rehabilitation, strength, and health reasons to reduce pain or enhance mobility and flexibility. At NDPE, we focus on these aspects as a measure of success, rather than centimetres and kilograms.

Is Reformer Pilates considered a challenging exercise method?

Your exercises will be tailored specifically to you so that they challenge you but are not beyond your capabilities. Over time, your strength and endurance will likely increase, enabling you to perform exercises you previously could not.

Can Reformer Pilates exercises be done without the need for a studio or specific equipment?

To engage in reformer Pilates at home, owning a reformer machine is essential. This equipment is specifically designed to provide the necessary support and resistance for performing reformer Pilates exercises. It’s important to be aware that reformer machines can be quite costly, especially if you’re looking for a commercial-quality machine that offers long-lasting durability and stability. However, investing in a high-quality reformer machine can provide a convenient and viable way to practice reformer Pilates in the comfort of your own home.

What is the typical timeframe to observe improvements from Reformer Pilates?

At NDPE, we emphasise the uniqueness of each person’s body and their individual experiences with Pilates. As a result, we avoid setting specific timeframes for expected results. Instead, we engage in open conversations with you to understand your goals and aspirations. Throughout your Pilates journey, our team will closely monitor your progress and provide you with regular updates. We believe in creating a supportive and empowering environment where your personal growth and achievements are celebrated, regardless of the specific timeline for results.

Can the expenses for NDPE Pilates sessions be covered by health insurance?

If you have sufficient coverage, you may be able to claim your classes with your health fund since they are conducted by qualified physiotherapists. We encourage you to check the terms and conditions of your health fund to determine the eligibility criteria and coverage details for our classes.
