Pilates has stood the test of time as a remarkable exercise method embraced worldwide. Its gentle yet impactful nature makes it suitable for individuals of all ages. With a focus on core strength, flexibility, and body awareness, Pilates offers a well-rounded approach that appeals to people at different stages of life. Whether you’re a beginner or seeking advanced challenges, Pilates can be adapted and modified to cater to various fitness levels and abilities.

Experience the benefits of our small group clinical Pilates classes at NDPE, where we incorporate reformer Pilates into our sessions. With the use of a Pilates reformer machine—a movable flat frame on wheels—reformer Pilates allows for targeted muscle strengthening. This aspect makes it an ideal option not only for individuals seeking to improve their core strength but also for athletes of all types, from graceful ballet dancers to dynamic football players.

What is Clinical Pilates?

With its focus on flexibility, strength, posture, and overall health, Clinical Pilates offers a tailored exercise method suitable for many individuals recovering from injuries or managing chronic medical conditions. By specifically targeting weakened or tight muscles, Clinical Pilates stimulates muscle activation, promoting improved mobility, stability, and overall physical well-being.

At NDPE, our experienced physiotherapists who lead our clinical Pilates classes prioritise individualised care and tailor workouts to accommodate each person’s unique health, injuries, and overall well-being. Our programs follow the principle of stabilisation, incorporating synchronised breathing with coordinated movements of the upper and lower extremities across a range of motions. Regardless of age or fitness level, Clinical Pilates offers a safe and practical exercise option, even during pregnancy.

In Which Conditions Can Clinical Pilates Be Helpful?

There are numerous conditions and circumstances in which Clinical Pilates may provide benefits, including:

What Is Reformer Pilates?

Reformer Pilates offers additional and unique benefits that may not be achievable in Pilates which is performed on a yoga mat. While mat work encourages you to use your body weight to provide resistance, reformer Pilates promotes proper form while adding resistance using adjustable springs. With this added assistance, you have access to a wider variety of exercises to build strength and improve mobility.

In reformer Pilates, the reformer is the key equipment used for the exercises. It is a flat and low-lying apparatus equipped with springs, straps, and adjustable bars. Under the guidance of your physiotherapist, you will engage in various movements using the reformer. One notable advantage of the reformer is that it allows you to exercise horizontally, rather than vertically, which reduces the weight bearing on your legs. This feature is especially beneficial for individuals who require a lower-impact workout or who have specific lower body considerations.

Reformer Pilates may not be suitable for certain individuals, such as those in their third trimester of pregnancy or people with spinal or neck conditions. It is advisable for patients to consult their doctor before embarking on an exercise program.

Elevate your Pilates experience with our reformer Pilates classes led by our knowledgeable physiotherapists. These classes combine the clinical aspects of Pilates with the utilisation of reformer machines to maximise the benefits. As our classes are conducted by qualified professionals, they may be eligible for health fund claims. Take advantage of this opportunity to enhance your Pilates practice under the guidance of our experienced team.

What are the conditions that can be improved through Reformer Pilates?

Reformer Pilates may help with a wide range of issues and circumstances such as:

  • Neck and shoulder pain
  • Injury prevention
  • Postnatal recovery
  • Chronic fatigue
  • Osteoporosis
  • Orthostatic Intolerance

Who Is Clinical And Reformer Pilates For?

Regardless of age or lifestyle, people can reap significant benefits from all forms of Pilates. Older adults may experience improved balance, stability, and posture, thereby reducing the risk of falls and maintaining independence. Pilates also serves as a gentle, joint-friendly exercise choice for individuals with joint issues or injuries. For younger individuals, Pilates offers a well-rounded workout that focuses on strength and flexibility, aiming to enhance overall fitness and prevent common musculoskeletal imbalances.

For individuals with physical limitations, Pilates serves as an excellent exercise option that provides support and gentleness while aiming to deliver noticeable outcomes. The use of reformer Pilates offers a significant benefit of minimising joint stress, as the majority of the exercises can be performed in lying or sitting positions.

With our highly skilled and experienced physiotherapists, you can expect a personalised program that caters to your unique abilities, requirements, and goals. They will be by your side, guiding you through each exercise and making any necessary modifications to ensure your comfort and progress.

How does Physiotherapy differ from Exercise Pilates?

The main differences between clinical Pilates and exercise Pilates lie in their underlying objectives and application. Clinical Pilates is a form of Pilates that is supervised by a qualified professional, such as our physiotherapists. It is often prescribed as part of a rehabilitation program to address specific injuries, musculoskeletal conditions, or postural issues. Clinical Pilates focuses on individualised assessment, targeted exercises, and tailored modifications to address the unique needs and limitations of each person.

In contrast, exercise Pilates, also known as traditional or mat Pilates, provides a more universal approach and is commonly available in fitness studios or group class environments. It focuses on improving overall strength, flexibility, and body conditioning through a series of exercises performed on a mat or utilising equipment like resistance bands. The primary aim of exercise Pilates is to enhance physical fitness, core strength, posture, and overall body awareness, without specifically addressing individual injuries or medical conditions.

Both clinical Pilates and exercise Pilates share fundamental principles and movements, but they differ in their approach. Clinical Pilates provides a more individualised and therapeutic experience, focusing on specific health concerns and conditions. It involves personalised assessments, targeted exercises, and modifications to meet individual needs. Exercise Pilates, on the other hand, offers a more general approach, aiming to enhance overall fitness and well-being without specifically targeting health concerns.

What are the benefits of Reformer Pilates?

Reformer Pilates offers a variety of potential benefits for both mental and physical health. These may include:

  • Tones muscles
  • Builds strength
  • Increases flexibility
  • Lessens risk of injury
  • Reduces aches and pains
  • Enhances core and posture
  • Improves balance and stability
  • Strengthens abdominal and pelvic floor muscles
  • Improves breathing enhances physical performance

Is reformer Pilates better than clinical Pilates?

Reformer Pilates offers a range of unique benefits that may not be easily attainable through clinical Pilates performed on a yoga mat. While mat work often serves its purpose and caters to the needs of many individuals, reformer Pilates aims to provide increased support and the ability to make precise adjustments.

Can you provide information on the average number of participants in a Reformer Pilates class?

NDPE provides reformer exercise classes in small groups, ensuring a personalised approach to each participant. This focus on individualisation promotes proper technique and enables participants to make the most out of their time in class. To maintain quality instruction, class sizes are limited to a maximum of 4 individuals and are led by qualified physiotherapists.

Can practising Reformer Pilates aid with achieving weight loss goals?

Weight loss is not the core goal of reformer Pilates, although any form of exercise may assist with weight loss. Reformer Pilates is typically used for rehabilitation, strength, and health reasons to reduce pain or enhance mobility and flexibility. At NDPE, we focus on these aspects as a measure of success, rather than centimetres and kilograms.

What level of difficulty can be expected in reformer Pilates?

Your workouts will be customised to suit your needs and abilities, ensuring a challenging yet achievable routine. As you progress, your strength and stamina will likely improve, allowing you to tackle exercises that were once out of reach.

Can Reformer Pilates exercises be done without the need for a studio or specific equipment?

In order to engage in reformer Pilates at home, it’s important to have access to a reformer machine. Reformer Pilates exercises are specifically designed to be performed using this specific equipment. If you’re interested in practising reformer Pilates in the comfort of your own home, you would need to invest in a reformer machine. It’s worth noting that commercial-quality reformer machines, which offer durability and stability, are usually more expensive.

What is the typical timeframe to observe improvements from Reformer Pilates?

We recognise that each individual’s body responds differently to Pilates, and therefore, it’s challenging to provide a specific timeframe for expected results. During your sessions at NDPE, we will have discussions about your goals, and our team will closely monitor your progress. We believe in celebrating the small victories along the way and providing you with regular updates on your advancement, ensuring that your Pilates experience is tailored to your unique needs and aspirations.

Are NDPE Pilates classes eligible for health fund rebates?

If you have sufficient coverage, you may be able to claim your classes with your health fund since they are conducted by qualified physiotherapists. We encourage you to check the terms and conditions of your health fund to determine the eligibility criteria and coverage details for our classes.
