Orthotics, also known as orthoses, are the correctional devices used to address and correct an individual’s foot and ankle problems without the need for surgery. These are custom to each person, as the biomechanics and need for them differs amongst each individual. They can resolve and aid your foot’s function to eliminate pain you once suffered. Orthotics change the pressure on certain parts of your feet and are custom made from the scans of your feet taken by the GaitScan™.

What is GaitScanTM

Orthotics Breakfast Point

GaitScanTM is a tool used by our physiotherapists to identify and detect any abnormal foot function. It analyses a patient’s biomechanics of their feet and creates clear, concise images that will determine the individual’s need for orthotics or not. By standing on the state-of-the-art metal plate, the shape of your foot is captured by over 4000 sensors and a super speed scan rate of up to 300 frames per second.

Should orthotics be hard or soft?

Custom Orthotics Breakfast Point The experience of wearing your orthotics will be based on your individual circumstances and several factors. Your physiotherapist will have a conversation with you to determine the most suitable option. As a quick summary:

Soft (ethyl vinyl acetate, EVA) orthotics:

  • Provide more padding
  • Are easy to modify
  • Are less likely to rub and cause blisters

Hard (polypropelene) orthotics:

  • Last longer
  • Influence the foot better
  • Fit more easily into fashion footwear or casual shoes

Are orthotics meant to hurt?

They might feel a bit uncomfortable initially, especially in the case of hard orthotics, which may require a gradual break-in period. However, they should not cause pain. If you’re still experiencing discomfort even after breaking them in, please don’t hesitate to inform us—we’re here to assist with any necessary adjustments.

Do I have to wear my orthotics all the time?

When you receive your custom orthotics, your body will require some time to acclimatise to them. The initial step involves a gradual wearing-in process, which typically spans two to four weeks. Your physiotherapist will provide you with specific guidance according to your individual needs and circumstances; nevertheless, here’s a general guideline: Day 1: Wear your custom orthotics for 30 minutes at a time, two to three times during the day. Day 2: Extend each wearing session by an additional 30 minutes. Day 3: Add another 30 minutes to each wear on top of the previous day. Continue increasing the duration by 30-minute increments each day over the next few weeks. Remove them during strenuous activities until they’re fully broken in.
