Understanding Orthotics

Orthotics, also called orthoses, are custom-made corrective devices utilised to address and rectify foot and ankle issues without resorting to surgical procedures. These devices are tailored to the distinctive requirements and biomechanics of each individual. By optimising foot function, orthotics aim to play a crucial role in alleviating prior discomfort. They achieve this by modifying pressure distribution on specific areas of the feet, utilising precise measurements obtained from GaitScan™ foot scans.

The Role of Custom Orthotics in Enhancing Your Well-being

Custom orthotics provide valuable assistance in managing various conditions, such as:

  1. Heel and arch pain
  2. Plantar fasciitis
  3. Knee pain
  4. Ball of foot pain
  5. Achilles tendon pain
  6. Sore and aching feet and legs
  7. Persistent corns and calluses
  8. Lower back pain
  9. Hip and knee alignment issues

Introducing GaitScan™

GaitScan™ is a cutting-edge tool employed by our physiotherapists to detect and identify any abnormal foot function. It analyses the biomechanics of a person’s feet, generating clear and concise images that determine the requirement for orthotics. By standing on a state-of-the-art metal plate, your foot’s shape is captured by over 4,000 sensors at an impressive scan rate of up to 300 frames per second.

Understanding Custom Orthotics: Your Queries Answered

Which is preferable: rigid or flexible orthotics?

The choice between rigid and flexible orthotics is contingent upon individual circumstances and several considerations. Our physiotherapists will engage in a comprehensive discussion with you to determine the most suitable option. Here’s a general overview:

Flexible (Ethyl Vinyl Acetate, EVA) Orthotics:

  • Provide enhanced cushioning
  • Easily customisable
  • Minimise the risk of friction and blisters

Rigid (Polypropylene) Orthotics:

  • Exhibit greater longevity
  • Influence foot mechanics more effectively
  • Suitable for various shoe styles, including fashion and casual footwear

Is it normal to feel some discomfort when starting to wear orthotics?

Similar to trying anything new, there may be an adjustment phase when you start using orthotics. Initially, there may be mild discomfort, especially if you are using hard orthotics. In such instances, it is recommended to gradually acclimate to wearing them. However, it is essential to understand that orthotics should not induce pain. If you continue to experience discomfort beyond the initial period, please inform us so that we can assist you with any required modifications or adaptations.

Is it necessary to wear orthotics constantly?

Upon receiving your custom orthotics, it is essential to allow your body time to adapt to them. Initially, it is recommended to gradually increase the duration of wear, which usually spans two to four weeks. Your physiotherapist will provide specific guidelines tailored to your individual needs and circumstances. However, as a general guideline, the following approach can be adopted:

Day 1: Wear your custom orthotics for 30 minutes at a time, two to three times throughout the day. Day 2: Extend the wear time by an additional 30 minutes per session. Day 3: Further increase the wear time by an additional 30 minutes per session on top of the previous day. Continue to increase the duration by increments of 30 minutes each day over the following weeks. It is recommended to remove the orthotics during strenuous activities until they are fully broken in. |

Are good foot orthotics a worthwhile investment?

Undoubtedly! Your feet bear the weight of your body tirelessly, making them deserving of the best possible care. If your physiotherapist advises the use of custom orthotics, it is highly recommended to follow their guidance. By wearing Good Feet orthotics as prescribed, you may experience the advantages of decreased pain and a lowered risk of injuries. The investment in these orthotics may be truly worthwhile, as they contribute to the overall health and well-being of your feet, which in turn may have positive effects on your mental state.

Can custom orthotics effectively address plantar fasciitis?

Indeed! Plantar fasciitis affects the way your feet function while standing and walking, leading to persistent pain. Fortunately, custom orthotics may offer an effective remedy by addressing the underlying issue. These tailor-made orthotics are specifically designed to restore proper foot mechanics, thereby alleviating strain on the plantar fascia—an essential tissue band that spans from the heel to the toes. By incorporating custom orthotics into your treatment plan, you may experience substantial relief from plantar fasciitis symptoms and aid in your overall recovery.
