What are Orthotics Ryde?

Orthotics, also referred to as orthoses, are corrective devices employed to address an individual’s foot and ankle issues without the necessity for surgery. These are tailored to each person, as the biomechanics and requirements vary among individuals. They can enhance and support your foot’s functionality to relieve pain you may be experiencing. Orthotics alter the pressure on specific areas of your feet and are individually crafted from the scans of your feet captured by the GaitScan™.

How Can Orthotics Help You?

Orthotics Ryde can be used in the treatment of:

What is GaitScanTM

Orthotics Ryde

GaitScanTM, a powerful tool utilised by our physiotherapists to identify any irregularities in foot function. It conducts a comprehensive analysis of a patient’s foot biomechanics, generating precise images that help determine whether orthotics are necessary. When you stand on the state-of-the-art metal plate, it captures the shape of your foot using over 4000 sensors, operating at an astonishing scan rate of up to 300 frames per second.

Should orthotics be hard or soft?

Custom Orthotics Ryde The experience of wearing your orthotics will be based on your individual circumstances and several factors. Your physiotherapist will have a conversation with you to determine the most suitable option. As a quick summary:

Soft (ethyl vinyl acetate, EVA) orthotics:

  • Provide more padding
  • Are easy to modify
  • Are less likely to rub and cause blisters

Hard (polypropelene) orthotics:

  • Last longer
  • Influence the foot better
  • Fit more easily into fashion footwear or casual shoes

Are orthotics meant to hurt?

As with trying anything new, there can certainly be an adjustment period involved in orthotics. They may be slightly uncomfortable at first, especially for hard orthotics, meaning you may need to wear them in gradually. However, they should not be painful. If you’re still experiencing discomfort after breaking them in, please let us know— we’re more than happy to help with any and all adjustments you may need.

Do I have to wear my orthotics all the time?

When you receive your custom orthotics, your body will need some time to adjust to them. The first step is to wear them gradually, which typically takes two to four weeks. Your physiotherapist will provide you with a guideline for your specific needs and circumstances; however, as a general guide: Day 1: Wear your custom orthotics for 30 minutes at a time, two to three times throughout the day. Day 2: Add an extra 30 minutes to each wear. Day 3: Add an extra 30 minutes to each wear on top of that. Continue to increase by 30-minute increments each day over the next few weeks. Remove them when doing a strenuous activity until they’re fully broken in.

Is it worth paying for custom orthotics?

In a word: yes! Your feet bear the weight of your body day in and day out, and they deserve to feel and perform at their best. If your physiotherapist recommends custom orthotics, making sure you wear them as directed will result in reduced pain and a lower risk of injuries. They are unquestionably a worthwhile investment for your physical—and consequently, mental—well-being.

Can I use orthotics for plantar fasciitis?

Plantar fasciitis has an impact on the way your feet function while standing and walking, and the associated pain may be eased with the utilisation of custom orthotics. Custom orthotics are intended to restore the mechanics of your feet, reducing strain on the plantar fascia, which is the band of tissue extending from your heel to the base of your toes. Therefore, custom orthotics may play a substantial role in your comprehensive treatment plan.
