Embracing natural measures towards recovery

Adopting a natural and holistic perspective, dry needling and acupuncture may bring about numerous benefits. These therapies not only target the symptoms but also aim to address the underlying cause of the issue, striving for lasting relief and overall well-being.

Dry needling specifically concentrates on affected regions or trigger points within your muscles and connective tissues. Its objective is to release tension, enhance blood circulation, and facilitate the regeneration of damaged tissues. As a result, you may experience reduced pain and inflammation, along with improved functionality.

Unveiling the Healing Potential of Acupuncture and Dry Needling

Acupuncture focuses on restoring the balance of Qi, the body’s energy, by stimulating specific points along the meridians. This technique supports the body’s natural self-repair mechanisms, potentially leading to improvements and relief in various conditions.

Embracing one or both of these alternative or complementary approaches to healthcare may assist in nurturing your body and mind, leading to a better feeling of balance and well-being. At NDPE, we offer high-quality services including both these therapies for local residents in West Ryde & surrounding areas including:

Unveiling the Healing Power of Dry Needling

Dry needling is an evidence-based treatment that may be used to address a variety of issues, such as acute and chronic pain and health conditions. This approach may also be particularly beneficial for athletes or individuals recovering from musculoskeletal injuries, as it aims to aid in pain management, enhance flexibility, and accelerate the healing process.

It primarily aims to enhance blood supply to tight or painful areas, evoking a beneficial “twitch” response that indicates muscle release. The focus of dry needling lies in calcium, which supports muscle contraction, and potassium, which facilitates relaxation. Through the stimulation of twitches, dry needling is believed to promote the influx of calcium and potassium into the muscle, resulting in relaxation and reduced pain in trigger points or areas of tightness.

During the procedure, fine needles are gently inserted into soft tissues, including muscles, fascia, ligaments, and tendons. Dry needling distinguishes itself from ‘wet’ needling, which involves needles containing medication. It’s often integrated into physiotherapy treatment plans and can also be employed as a standalone therapy. While it may be confused with acupuncture, it differs in terms of underlying philosophies and its focus on Western anatomy.

Exploring the Therapeutic Applications of Dry Needling

Dry needling is a versatile treatment technique that aims to address a range of issues, including:

Exploring What to Anticipate During Your Dry Needling Session

During your initial appointment, your physiotherapist will conduct a thorough discussion about your trigger points, including their location, sensation, possible underlying causes, and impact on your daily life.

Once we have determined that dry needling may benefit your treatment plan, your sessions will involve you lying back as one of our physiotherapists inserts the fine needles into your trigger points to elicit the twitch response with the aim of addressing your pain and discomfort.

To elicit the desired twitch response, your physiotherapist may gently flick and manipulate the needle within the muscle. It’s important to note that the twitch response may take some time to occur, and during this process, you might experience a brief dull ache for a few seconds.

We Answer Your Questions About Dry Needling

How long can dry needling be beneficial?

The duration of the benefits obtained from dry needling varies from person to person. It is influenced by factors such as the underlying cause of the issue, whether it is acute or chronic, and your lifestyle. These factors will ultimately determine how long the benefits of dry needling will last for you.

How many sessions do I have to go through?

The number of sessions needed for dry needling is influenced by individual factors. Typically, most individuals benefit from multiple sessions as the sore or tight area adapts and responds to the treatment over time. This progressive approach allows for a comprehensive and adequate treatment outcome.

What should I do after the dry needling appointment?

It is important to stay hydrated following your dry needling appointment, so avoid intense physical activity on the day of your session. Drink a sufficient amount of water and if you experience any muscle soreness, rest and use remedies such as a warm bath or ice therapy.

Does dry needling hurt?

The process of inserting dry needles is generally not painful, and many patients find it to be a soothing experience. While some individuals may feel a brief twitch response, it is typically well-tolerated. It is important to be aware that after a dry needling session, you may experience mild “post-needle soreness” either later on the same day or the next day. This discomfort is considered normal and usually resolves within a couple of days.
