Unveiling the Healing Potential of Acupuncture and Dry Needling

Acupuncture aims to restore the balance of energy, also known as Qi, by stimulating specific points along the meridians in the body. This aims to promote and enhance the body’s natural ability to repair itself, which may help to improve or alleviate various conditions and issues, providing a comprehensive solution to improve both physical and mental health.

Embracing one or both of these alternative or complementary approaches to healthcare may assist in nurturing your body and mind, leading to a better feeling of balance and well-being. At NDPE, we offer high-quality services including both these therapies for local residents in West Ryde & surrounding areas including:

Unveiling the Healing Power of Dry Needling

Dry needling is an evidence-based treatment that may be used to address a variety of issues, such as acute and chronic pain and health conditions. This approach may also be particularly beneficial for athletes or individuals recovering from musculoskeletal injuries, as it aims to aid in pain management, enhance flexibility, and accelerate the healing process.

It primarily aims to enhance blood supply to tight or painful areas, evoking a beneficial “twitch” response that indicates muscle release. The focus of dry needling lies in calcium, which supports muscle contraction, and potassium, which facilitates relaxation. Through the stimulation of twitches, dry needling is believed to promote the influx of calcium and potassium into the muscle, resulting in relaxation and reduced pain in trigger points or areas of tightness.

During the procedure, fine needles are gently inserted into soft tissues, including muscles, fascia, ligaments, and tendons. Dry needling distinguishes itself from ‘wet’ needling, which involves needles containing medication. It’s often integrated into physiotherapy treatment plans and can also be employed as a standalone therapy. While it may be confused with acupuncture, it differs in terms of underlying philosophies and its focus on Western anatomy.

Understanding the Process of a Dry Needling Session

During your first appointment, your dedicated physiotherapist will engage in a comprehensive discussion regarding your trigger points, including their precise locations, the sensations they produce, their potential root causes, and how they affect your daily life.

Based on the assessment, if it is determined that dry needling may be a suitable treatment option for you, your subsequent sessions will involve lying back as our experienced physiotherapist gently inserts fine needles into your trigger points. This process aims to elicit a twitch response, which may provide targeted relief and address your pain and discomfort.

To achieve this twitch response, they will flick the needle and gently move it in and out of the muscle. Sometimes, it takes a while for the twitch response to begin, and you may feel a dull ache for a few seconds.

All Your Dry Needling Questions Answered

How long does dry needling work?

The duration of the benefits obtained from dry needling varies from person to person. It is influenced by factors such as the underlying cause of the issue, whether it is acute or chronic, and your lifestyle. These factors will ultimately determine how long the benefits of dry needling will last for you.

How many dry-needling sessions will I require?

The number of sessions needed for dry needling is influenced by individual factors. Typically, most individuals benefit from multiple sessions as the sore or tight area adapts and responds to the treatment over time. This progressive approach allows for a comprehensive and adequate treatment outcome.

Is there anything I should do after dry needling?

To support your recovery after dry needling, it is essential to stay hydrated. Refrain from participating in strenuous physical activities on the same day as your session. Make sure to drink enough water to maintain hydration. In the event of muscle soreness, it is advisable to rest and consider using therapeutic methods like a warm bath or ice therapy to alleviate discomfort.

Is dry needling painful?

During the insertion of the needles, most individuals do not experience significant pain. The twitch response, if felt, is usually brief and tolerable, and many patients find the overall experience relaxing. It is important to note that after a dry needling session, you may experience mild “post-needle soreness” either later that day or the next day. This discomfort is normal and typically resolves within a couple of days.
