Taking natural steps towards healing

Adopting a natural and holistic perspective, dry needling and acupuncture may bring about numerous benefits. These therapies not only target the symptoms but also aim to address the underlying cause of the issue, striving for lasting relief and overall well-being.

Dry needling concentrates on affected regions or trigger points in your muscles and connective tissues. It works in an effort to release tension, improve blood circulation, and promote the regeneration of damaged tissues, which may lead to reduced pain and inflammation and increased functionality.

This practice may enhance the body’s natural ability to repair itself, potentially bringing about improvements in various conditions and promoting overall well-being.

By incorporating acupuncture alongside other holistic therapies, you may experience a comprehensive solution that promotes both physical and mental well-being. Unveiling the Healing Power of Dry Needling

Dry needling is a well-founded treatment approach that aims to address a wide array of issues, encompassing acute and chronic pain and various health conditions. This technique may hold significant value for athletes and individuals in musculoskeletal recovery, as it is thought to play a vital role in pain management, flexibility enhancement, and expedited healing. By relying on evidence-based principles, dry needling may offer a beneficial avenue for promoting comprehensive well-being.

Dry needling aims to improve blood supply to tight or painful regions, eliciting a potentially beneficial “twitch” response that may indicate muscle release. Calcium and potassium, vital elements in muscle function, play a key role in dry needling. By inducing twitches, dry needling facilitates the release of calcium and potassium into the muscle, promoting relaxation and reducing pain in trigger points or areas of tension.

This technique involves the gentle insertion of fine needles into soft tissues, including muscles, fascia, ligaments, and tendons. Dry needling should not be confused with ‘wet’ needling, which involves needles containing medication. It’s often incorporated as part of physiotherapy treatment protocols and can also be utilised as a standalone therapy. While similarities exist with acupuncture, dry needling differs in terms of underlying philosophies and its foundation in Western anatomy.

What Can You Expect During Your Dry Needling Appointment?

During your first appointment, your dedicated physiotherapist will engage in a comprehensive discussion regarding your trigger points, including their precise locations, the sensations they produce, their potential root causes, and how they affect your daily life.

Once we have determined that dry needling may benefit your treatment plan, your sessions will involve you lying back as one of our physiotherapists inserts the fine needles into your trigger points to elicit the twitch response with the aim of addressing your pain and discomfort.

To achieve this twitch response, they will flick the needle and gently move it in and out of the muscle. Sometimes, it takes a while for the twitch response to begin, and you may feel a dull ache for a few seconds.

All Your Dry Needling Questions Answered

How long does dry needling work?

The duration of the benefits achieved through dry needling can vary among individuals. It depends on various factors, including the root cause of the issue, whether it is acute or chronic, and your lifestyle choices. These factors collectively influence how long you can expect the benefits of dry needling to endure.

How many sessions will I need of dry needling?

The number of sessions required for dry needling is individualised and can vary for each person. In most cases, several sessions are recommended to allow for the gradual adjustment of the sore or tight area. This approach ensures optimal results and allows the body to respond to the treatment over time.

What should I do after the dry needling appointment?

It is important to stay hydrated following your dry needling appointment, so avoid intense physical activity on the day of your session. Drink a sufficient amount of water and if you experience any muscle soreness, rest and use remedies such as a warm bath or ice therapy.

Is it painful to undergo dry needling?

The insertion of the needles is generally not painful, and while the twitch response can sometimes be felt briefly, many patients find it a relaxing experience. Sometimes after a dry needling session, either later that day or the next day, you may feel ‘post needle soreness’. This is typically mild and normal and usually lasts no longer than a couple of days.
