Taking natural steps towards healing
By adopting a natural and holistic approach, dry needling and acupuncture may offer numerous benefits. These modalities not only aim to alleviate symptoms but also work to target the underlying cause of the issue, aiming for long-term relief and improved overall well-being.
Dry needling concentrates on affected regions or trigger points in your muscles and connective tissues. It works in an effort to release tension, improve blood circulation, and promote the regeneration of damaged tissues, which may lead to reduced pain and inflammation and increased functionality.
About Acupuncture & Dry Needling
Acupuncture aims to restore the balance of energy, also known as Qi, by stimulating specific points along the meridians in the body. This aims to promote and enhance the body’s natural ability to repair itself, which may help to improve or alleviate various conditions and issues, providing a comprehensive solution to improve both physical and mental health.
By incorporating acupuncture alongside other holistic therapies, you may experience a comprehensive solution that promotes both physical and mental well-being. At NDPE, we are dedicated to providing high-quality services, including acupuncture and other alternative therapies, to residents in West Ryde and surrounding areas such as:

What is Dry Needling?
Dry needling is a well-founded treatment approach that aims to address a wide array of issues, encompassing acute and chronic pain and various health conditions. This technique may hold significant value for athletes and individuals in musculoskeletal recovery, as it is thought to play a vital role in pain management, flexibility enhancement, and expedited healing. By relying on evidence-based principles, dry needling may offer a beneficial avenue for promoting comprehensive well-being.
The aim of dry needling is to increase blood supply to the tight or painful area, which then provokes a ‘twitch’ response. This twitch is seen as a good sign, as it may indicate the muscle is ‘releasing’. Dry needling focuses much of its attention on calcium, which supports contraction, and potassium, which provides relaxation. It aims to flush calcium and potassium into the muscle with each twitch, allowing your trigger points (sore or tight areas) to feel more relaxed and less painful.
During the procedure, fine needles are gently inserted into soft tissues, including muscles, fascia, ligaments, and tendons. Dry needling distinguishes itself from ‘wet’ needling, which involves needles containing medication. It’s often integrated into physiotherapy treatment plans and can also be employed as a standalone therapy. While it may be confused with acupuncture, it differs in terms of underlying philosophies and its focus on Western anatomy.

What Can You Expect During Your Dry Needling Appointment?
In your initial appointment, your physiotherapist will take the time to understand your trigger points, including their specific locations, how they feel, the factors possibly contributing to them, and the impact they have on your daily functioning.
Based on the assessment, if it is determined that dry needling may be a suitable treatment option for you, your subsequent sessions will involve lying back as our experienced physiotherapist gently inserts fine needles into your trigger points. This process aims to elicit a twitch response, which may provide targeted relief and address your pain and discomfort.
In order to stimulate the twitch response, your physiotherapist will gently flick the needle and perform subtle movements, inserting and withdrawing it within the muscle. It’s worth mentioning that the twitch response may not happen immediately, and you might experience a temporary dull ache for a few seconds during the procedure.

We Answer Your Questions About Dry Needling
How long will dry needling benefit me?
The duration of the benefits achieved through dry needling can vary among individuals. It depends on various factors, including the root cause of the issue, whether it is acute or chronic, and your lifestyle choices. These factors collectively influence how long you can expect the benefits of dry needling to endure.
How many sessions will I need of dry needling?
The number of sessions required for dry needling is individualised and can vary for each person. In most cases, several sessions are recommended to allow for the gradual adjustment of the sore or tight area. This approach ensures optimal results and allows the body to respond to the treatment over time.
Do I need to do anything after the dry needle session?
To support your recovery after dry needling, it is essential to stay hydrated. Refrain from participating in strenuous physical activities on the same day as your session. Make sure to drink enough water to maintain hydration. In the event of muscle soreness, it is advisable to rest and consider using therapeutic methods like a warm bath or ice therapy to alleviate discomfort.
Does dry needling hurt?
The process of inserting dry needles is generally not painful, and many patients find it to be a soothing experience. While some individuals may feel a brief twitch response, it is typically well-tolerated. It is important to be aware that after a dry needling session, you may experience mild “post-needle soreness” either later on the same day or the next day. This discomfort is considered normal and usually resolves within a couple of days.
