Taking natural steps towards healing

Taking a natural, holistic approach towards dry needling and acupuncture may achieve a multitude of benefits. These modalities aim to not only address your symptoms but also focus on treating the root cause of the problem, working towards long-term relief and overall well-being.

Dry needling specifically concentrates on affected regions or trigger points within your muscles and connective tissues. Its objective is to release tension, enhance blood circulation, and facilitate the regeneration of damaged tissues. As a result, you may experience reduced pain and inflammation, along with improved functionality.

This aims to promote and enhance the body’s natural ability to repair itself, which may help to improve or alleviate various conditions and issues, providing a comprehensive solution to improve both physical and mental health.

Unveiling the Healing Power of Dry Needling

As an evidence-based treatment, dry needling aims to be highly useful in addressing diverse issues, including acute and chronic pain as well as various health conditions. This approach may be particularly advantageous for athletes and individuals on the path to musculoskeletal recovery, offering notable benefits such as enhanced pain management, increased flexibility, and accelerated healing. With its scientific foundation, dry needling stands as a valuable technique that aims to support overall health and well-being.

The primary objective of dry needling is to enhance blood supply to tight or painful areas, triggering a beneficial “twitch” response. This twitch is thought to signify muscle release, which is a positive indication. Dry needling primarily focuses on the interplay of calcium, essential for muscle contraction, and potassium, responsible for relaxation. By stimulating twitches, dry needling is believed to facilitate the influx of calcium and potassium into the muscle, promoting relaxation and alleviating pain in trigger points or tense areas.

This technique involves the gentle insertion of fine needles into soft tissues such as muscles, fascia, ligaments, and tendons. Dry needling should not be confused with ‘wet’ needling, where needles contain medication. It’s commonly integrated into physiotherapy treatment plans and can also be employed as an independent therapy. While it shares similarities with acupuncture, dry needling is based on different philosophies and focuses on Western anatomy.

Unveiling the Experience of a Dry Needling Appointment

During your initial appointment, your physiotherapist will conduct a thorough discussion about your trigger points, including their location, sensation, possible underlying causes, and impact on your daily life.

Once we have determined that dry needling may benefit your treatment plan, your sessions will involve you lying back as one of our physiotherapists inserts the fine needles into your trigger points to elicit the twitch response with the aim of addressing your pain and discomfort.

In order to trigger the twitch response, your physiotherapist will employ techniques such as flicking the needle and delicately manipulating it within the muscle. It’s important to note that the twitch response may not happen instantaneously, and you may experience a brief, mild ache for a few seconds during the process.

Your Dry Needling Questions Answered

How long can dry needling be beneficial?

The duration of the benefits achieved through dry needling can vary among individuals. It depends on various factors, including the root cause of the issue, whether it is acute or chronic, and your lifestyle choices. These factors collectively influence how long you can expect the benefits of dry needling to endure.

How many dry-needling sessions will I require?

The number of sessions needed for dry needling varies based on individual factors. In general, most people require several sessions to address the sore or tight area. This is because the body needs time to adjust and respond to the treatment over a series of sessions.

Do I need to do anything after the dry needle session?

After your dry needling session, it is crucial to maintain proper hydration. Avoid engaging in intense physical activities on the day of your appointment. Remember to drink an adequate amount of water to stay hydrated. If you experience muscle soreness, it is recommended to rest and consider using remedies like a warm bath or ice therapy for relief.

Is dry needling painful?

The process of inserting dry needles is generally not painful, and many patients find it to be a soothing experience. While some individuals may feel a brief twitch response, it is typically well-tolerated. It is important to be aware that after a dry needling session, you may experience mild “post-needle soreness” either later on the same day or the next day. This discomfort is considered normal and usually resolves within a couple of days.
