Adaptable exercise options to cater for your specific circumstances.

Before embarking on any exercise program, it is essential to take stock of your abilities and objectives, ensuring that they align with the features and advantages offered by the chosen activity. This becomes particularly relevant during the rehabilitation and recovery process, where targeted exercises may greatly contribute to your overall well-being.

Pilates has stood the test of time as a remarkable exercise method embraced worldwide. Its gentle yet impactful nature makes it suitable for individuals of all ages. With a focus on core strength, flexibility, and body awareness, Pilates offers a well-rounded approach that appeals to people at different stages of life. Whether you’re a beginner or seeking advanced challenges, Pilates can be adapted and modified to cater to various fitness levels and abilities.

At NDPE, we provide small group clinical Pilates classes that integrate reformer Pilates. Utilising a Pilates reformer machine, and a dynamic flat frame on wheels, reformer Pilates helps develop optimal muscle strength. This makes it an exceptional choice for individuals aiming to enhance their core stability and is equally beneficial for athletes across various disciplines, including ballet dancers and football players.

What is Clinical Pilates?

With its focus on flexibility, strength, posture, and overall health, Clinical Pilates offers a tailored exercise method suitable for many individuals recovering from injuries or managing chronic medical conditions. By specifically targeting weakened or tight muscles, Clinical Pilates stimulates muscle activation, promoting improved mobility, stability, and overall physical well-being.

Our dedicated physiotherapists at NDPE who conduct our clinical Pilates classes prioritise the individual needs of each participant. By considering personal health, injuries, and overall well-being, they curate personalised workouts tailored to specific requirements. Following the principle of stabilisation, these programs encompass synchronised breathing techniques while engaging both the upper and lower extremities in a range of controlled movements. Clinical Pilates is a versatile exercise option suitable for individuals of all ages and fitness levels, including expectant mothers as it is deemed safe during pregnancy.

Which Health Conditions Can Be Improved Through Clinical Pilates?

There are numerous conditions and circumstances in which Clinical Pilates may provide benefits, including:

What Is Reformer Pilates?

Reformer Pilates takes the principles of Pilates to new heights by utilising an apparatus called a reformer. Unlike Pilates on a mat, reformer Pilates offers unique benefits through the use of adjustable springs that provide resistance. This added resistance, combined with the focus on proper form, allows for a more targeted and efficient workout. With access to a wide variety of exercises, reformer Pilates helps build strength, increase flexibility, and enhance mobility in ways that may not be achievable through mat Pilates alone.

In reformer Pilates, the reformer is the key equipment used for the exercises. It is a flat and low-lying apparatus equipped with springs, straps, and adjustable bars. Under the guidance of your physiotherapist, you will engage in various movements using the reformer. One notable advantage of the reformer is that it allows you to exercise horizontally, rather than vertically, which reduces the weight bearing on your legs. This feature is especially beneficial for individuals who require a lower-impact workout or who have specific lower body considerations.

Some patients, such as those in their third trimester of pregnancy or individuals with spinal or neck issues, may not be suitable for reformer Pilates. Patients should consult their doctor before commencing an exercise program.

Elevate your Pilates experience with our reformer Pilates classes led by our knowledgeable physiotherapists. These classes combine the clinical aspects of Pilates with the utilisation of reformer machines to maximise the benefits. As our classes are conducted by qualified professionals, they may be eligible for health fund claims. Take advantage of this opportunity to enhance your Pilates practice under the guidance of our experienced team.

Which specific conditions can Reformer Pilates assist with?

Reformer Pilates may help with a wide range of issues and circumstances such as:

Who Is Clinical And Reformer Pilates For?

Pilates, in all its forms, may bring significant benefits to individuals of all ages and diverse lifestyles. For older adults, Pilates enhances balance, stability, and posture, reducing the risk of falls and promoting independence. It also serves as a gentle exercise alternative for those with joint problems or injuries. For younger individuals, Pilates delivers a comprehensive workout that focuses on strength and flexibility, improving overall fitness and preventing common musculoskeletal imbalances.

It’s a great exercise for individuals with physical limitations who seek a supported and gentle activity that aims to yield results. One notable advantage of reformer Pilates is the reduced stress on joints, as most of the exercises can be performed in a lying or sitting position.

Our qualified and experienced physiotherapists will develop a personalised program for you that takes in your abilities, requirements and goals, will guide you through each exercise, and will make adjustments when needed.

At NDPE we offer quality care including clinical Pilates and reformer Pilates for local residents in West Ryde and surrounding areas such as Eastwood, Denistone, Epping, and Ryde.

In what ways do Physiotherapy and Exercise Pilates vary from each other?

The key distinctions between clinical Pilates and exercise Pilates lie in their objectives and implementation. Clinical Pilates is a form of Pilates overseen by qualified professionals, such as our physiotherapists. It is frequently prescribed as part of a rehabilitation regimen to address particular injuries, musculoskeletal conditions, or postural concerns. Clinical Pilates focuses on personalised assessments, specific exercises, and tailored adaptations to meet the unique requirements and limitations of each individual.

In contrast, exercise Pilates, also known as traditional or mat Pilates, provides a more universal approach and is commonly available in fitness studios or group class environments. It focuses on improving overall strength, flexibility, and body conditioning through a series of exercises performed on a mat or utilising equipment like resistance bands. The primary aim of exercise Pilates is to enhance physical fitness, core strength, posture, and overall body awareness, without specifically addressing individual injuries or medical conditions.

While clinical Pilates and exercise Pilates have foundational principles and movements in common, clinical Pilates takes a more individualised and therapeutic approach. It is tailored to address specific health concerns and conditions, providing targeted exercises and modifications. On the other hand, exercise Pilates has a broader focus on overall fitness and well-being, offering a general approach to improving strength, flexibility, and body conditioning.

  • Increases flexibility
  • Lessens risk of injury
  • Reduces aches and pains
  • Enhances core and posture
  • Improves balance and stability
  • Strengthens abdominal and pelvic floor muscles
  • Improves breathing enhances physical performance

Is reformer Pilates better than clinical Pilates?

The use of a reformer can offer additional and unique benefits that may not be achievable in clinical Pilates performed on a yoga mat. Mat work may be perfect for what many people want and need, while reformer Pilates may provide more support and adjustments.

How many people will be in my class?

At NDPE, we offer reformer exercise classes in small groups, allowing us to provide an individualised approach to each participant. This approach ensures that correct technique is emphasised and participants can make the most out of their time in class. To maintain a high standard of instruction, we limit class sizes to a maximum of 4 individuals and have qualified physiotherapists leading the sessions.

Can practising Reformer Pilates aid with achieving weight loss goals?

Weight loss is not the core goal of reformer Pilates, although any form of exercise may assist with weight loss. Reformer Pilates is typically used for rehabilitation, strength, and health reasons to reduce pain or enhance mobility and flexibility. At NDPE, we focus on these aspects as a measure of success, rather than centimetres and kilograms.

Is reformer Pilates hard?

Your exercises will be tailored specifically to you so that they challenge you but are not beyond your capabilities. Over time, your strength and endurance will likely increase, enabling you to perform exercises you previously could not.

Is it possible to practice Reformer Pilates in a home setting?

To engage in reformer Pilates at home, owning a reformer machine is essential. This equipment is specifically designed to provide the necessary support and resistance for performing reformer Pilates exercises. It’s important to be aware that reformer machines can be quite costly, especially if you’re looking for a commercial-quality machine that offers long-lasting durability and stability. However, investing in a high-quality reformer machine can provide a convenient and viable way to practice reformer Pilates in the comfort of your own home.

What is the typical timeframe to observe improvements from Reformer Pilates?

We recognise that each individual’s body responds differently to Pilates, and therefore, it’s challenging to provide a specific timeframe for expected results. During your sessions at NDPE, we will have discussions about your goals, and our team will closely monitor your progress. We believe in celebrating the small victories along the way and providing you with regular updates on your advancement, ensuring that your Pilates experience is tailored to your unique needs and aspirations.

Can I claim NDPE Pilates classes with my health fund?

If you have sufficient coverage, you may be able to claim your classes with your health fund since they are conducted by qualified physiotherapists. We encourage you to check the terms and conditions of your health fund to determine the eligibility criteria and coverage details for our classes.

NDPE offers both Reformer and clinical Pilates.
