Adaptable Exercise That Suits You

Selecting the right form of exercise involves a thoughtful assessment of your abilities and aspirations, making sure they align with the specific benefits that may be provided by the activity. This is especially crucial when it comes to rehabilitation and recovery, where the right exercises can make a significant difference in your progress.

Pilates, a highly regarded exercise method practised globally, offers a multitude of benefits to individuals of all ages. Its gentle yet impactful nature makes it an ideal choice for a wide range of participants. With a focus on core strength, flexibility, and body awareness, Pilates caters to individuals at various stages of life. Whether you’re a beginner seeking a foundation or an advanced participant looking for a challenge, Pilates can be adjusted and customised to accommodate different fitness levels and abilities.

At NDPE, we offer small group clinical Pilates classes that incorporate reformer Pilates. Reformer Pilates is done via a Pilates reformer machine, a flat frame that rolls back and forth on wheels to assist in creating muscle strength. This makes reformer Pilates an excellent option for people looking to strengthen their core, along with all types of athletes, from ballet dancers to football players.

What is Clinical Pilates?

With its focus on flexibility, strength, posture, and overall health, Clinical Pilates offers a tailored exercise method suitable for many individuals recovering from injuries or managing chronic medical conditions. By specifically targeting weakened or tight muscles, Clinical Pilates stimulates muscle activation, promoting improved mobility, stability, and overall physical well-being.

Our physiotherapists who run our clinical Pilates classes at NDPE take each person’s health, injuries, and overall well-being into account to create a personalised workout. Based on the principle of stabilising, programs involve coordinating breathing while moving your upper and lower extremities through a range of motions. Clinical Pilates is suitable for people of all ages and fitness levels and is a safe exercise during pregnancy.

What Conditions Can Clinical Pilates Help With?

Clinical Pilates may assist with various conditions and situations, including:

What Is Reformer Pilates?

Reformer Pilates provides a distinctive approach to exercise that sets it apart from traditional mat Pilates. While mat work relies on body weight for resistance, reformer Pilates incorporates adjustable springs to add resistance and enhance the usefulness of each movement. This combination of proper form and adjustable resistance allows for a broader range of exercises, enabling you to build strength, improve flexibility, and enhance overall mobility.

The reformer is a piece of equipment used in reformer Pilates. It is a flat and low-to-the-ground apparatus that features springs, straps, and adjustable bars. With the guidance of your physiotherapist, you will perform movements using the reformer, which allows for horizontal exercise instead of vertical. This horizontal position helps reduce weight-bearing on the legs, making it a suitable option for individuals with certain conditions or limitations. The reformer is a unique equipment utilised in reformer Pilates. It is a flat and close-to-the-ground apparatus that incorporates springs, straps, and adjustable bars. During your reformer Pilates session, your physiotherapist will lead you through a series of movements using the machine. Unlike traditional exercises that are performed vertically, the reformer enables horizontal exercise, which minimises weight-bearing on the legs. This aspect is particularly beneficial for individuals who need reduced stress or impact on their lower body.

Some patients, such as those in their third trimester of pregnancy or people with spinal or neck issues, may not be suitable for reformer Pilates. Patients should seek advice from their doctor before starting an exercise program.

Our reformer Pilates classes are led by our experienced physiotherapists, ensuring that you receive the highest level of guidance. By combining the clinical approach of Pilates with the use of reformers, our classes provide enhanced benefits and results. What’s more, as our classes are conducted by qualified professionals, you may be eligible to claim them with your health fund.

In what ways can Reformer Pilates benefit individuals with certain conditions?

Reformer Pilates may be beneficial for a variety of conditions, such as:

Who Is Clinical And Reformer Pilates For?

Pilates, in all its forms, may bring significant benefits to individuals of all ages and diverse lifestyles. For older adults, Pilates enhances balance, stability, and posture, reducing the risk of falls and promoting independence. It also serves as a gentle exercise alternative for those with joint problems or injuries. For younger individuals, Pilates delivers a comprehensive workout that focuses on strength and flexibility, improving overall fitness and preventing common musculoskeletal imbalances.

Pilates is also often an ideal exercise for people who have physical limitations and are looking for a supported and gentle activity that still offers results. A significant advantage of reformer Pilates, in particular, is that there is less stress put on the joints as the majority of the workout can be performed lying or sitting down.

At our clinic, our qualified and experienced physiotherapists will design a customised program tailored to your abilities, specific needs, and goals. They will be there to assist you throughout each exercise, providing guidance and making any necessary adjustments along the way.

What Is The Difference Between Physiotherapy and Exercise Pilates?

Clinical Pilates and exercise Pilates differ in their core objectives and practical applications. Clinical Pilates is a specialised type of Pilates supervised by qualified practitioners, like our physiotherapists. It is often recommended as part of a rehabilitation plan to target specific injuries, musculoskeletal conditions, or postural issues. Clinical Pilates prioritises individualised assessments, targeted exercises, and customised modifications to cater to the distinct needs and limitations of each individual.

In contrast, exercise Pilates, also known as traditional or mat Pilates, provides a more universal approach and is commonly available in fitness studios or group class environments. It focuses on improving overall strength, flexibility, and body conditioning through a series of exercises performed on a mat or utilising equipment like resistance bands. The primary aim of exercise Pilates is to enhance physical fitness, core strength, posture, and overall body awareness, without specifically addressing individual injuries or medical conditions.

Although clinical Pilates and exercise Pilates share fundamental principles and movements, clinical Pilates takes a more personalised and therapeutic approach, focusing on individual needs and specific health concerns. It is designed to address and alleviate specific conditions or injuries. In contrast, exercise Pilates offers a more general approach, promoting overall fitness and well-being without targeting specific health concerns.

What factors should be considered when choosing between reformer Pilates and clinical Pilates?

The use of a reformer can offer additional and unique benefits that may not be achievable in clinical Pilates performed on a yoga mat. Mat work may be perfect for what many people want and need, while reformer Pilates may provide more support and adjustments.

Is there a maximum limit to the number of individuals in a Reformer Pilates class?

NDPE provides reformer exercise classes in small groups, ensuring a personalised approach to each participant. This focus on individualisation promotes proper technique and enables participants to make the most out of their time in class. To maintain quality instruction, class sizes are limited to a maximum of 4 individuals and are led by qualified physiotherapists.

Can practising Reformer Pilates aid with achieving weight loss goals?

Weight loss is not the core goal of reformer Pilates, although any form of exercise may assist with weight loss. Reformer Pilates is typically used for rehabilitation, strength, and health reasons to reduce pain or enhance mobility and flexibility. At NDPE, we focus on these aspects as a measure of success, rather than centimetres and kilograms.

Are there different intensity levels in Reformer Pilates for individuals with varying fitness levels?

We will tailor your workouts to suit your unique abilities, providing challenges that are within your current capabilities. Over time, you will likely witness improvements in your strength and stamina, enabling you to conquer exercises that were once considered unattainable.

Is it possible to practice Reformer Pilates in a home setting?

Reformer Pilates can only be done with a reformer machine. As such, you would need your own reformer machine in order to do reformer Pilates at home. These are available for purchase, however, it’s best to purchase a commercial-quality machine, which typically comes at a significant cost.

What is the typical timeframe to observe improvements from Reformer Pilates?

We recognise that each individual’s body responds differently to Pilates, and therefore, it’s challenging to provide a specific timeframe for expected results. During your sessions at NDPE, we will have discussions about your goals, and our team will closely monitor your progress. We believe in celebrating the small victories along the way and providing you with regular updates on your advancement, ensuring that your Pilates experience is tailored to your unique needs and aspirations.

Can I claim NDPE Pilates classes with my health fund?

If you have adequate coverage, you can claim your classes with your health fund because they are delivered by physiotherapists.
