Sinding-Larsen-Johansson Syndrome In Children
What Are The Signs And How Can It Be Treated?
What Is Sinding-Larsen-Johansson Syndrome?
Sinding-Larsen-Johansson Syndrome is a condition experienced only by growing children and adolescents, involving pain at the bottom of the patella (kneecap).
Growth plates enable bone development and solidify with age. These cartilage areas are located near the end of the bone and are weaker and more susceptible to injury than solid parts of the bone. Sinding-Larsen-Johansson Syndrome is the condition that occurs when repeated stress is placed on the kneecap growth plate.
The connection between the kneecap and shinbone (tibia) is via the patellar tendon. This tendon puts pressure on the kneecap growth plate each time the leg is straightened. As this pressure and overuse continues, the child may develop soreness and pain in the area around the kneecap.
What are the Signs of Sinding-Larsen-Johansson Syndrome?
Pain under the patella in children and teens is the most common symptom of Sinding-Larsen-Johansson Syndrome. Your child or teenager may experience:
- Increased pain under the kneecap during physical activity, particularly running and jumping.
- Tenderness, discomfort and swelling around the kneecap.
- Severe pain during knee-bending and kneeling activities.
Active Children / Teens and Sinding-Larsen-Johansson Syndrome
Physical exercise places additional strain on the muscles, joints, bones and the growth plates of children. This additional stress can exacerbate the pressure on the growth plate, leading to Sinding-Larsen-Johansson Syndrome symptoms.
Active children between the ages of 9 and 14 who regularly participate in athletics or sport are most likely to develop this condition.
How can Sinding-Larsen-Johansson Syndrome be Treated?
Children with Sinding-Larsen-Johansson Syndrome can typically continue to participate in physical activity and daily life as pain and activity level can be managed. As the body develops and the knees strengthen, Sinding-Larsen-Johansson Syndrome ceases to exist with age.
