Visiting A Physio To Treat Jaw Pain (TMJ)

TMJ Jaw pain west ryde
TMJ pain (jaw pain) is common and may be caused by a range of behaviours, imbalances and pre-existing conditions. Physiotherapy can effectively treat TMJ pain, reducing pain and teaching you the exercises to maintain long term relief.
TMJ refers to the temporomandibular joint that attaches the jaw bone (mandible) to the skull. The joint plays a vital role in chewing, speech, swallowing, breathing and any movement of the mouth. When affected by injury, disorders or degeneration, these processes can be impacted.
Pain and dysfunction of the TMJ can be caused by a variety of factors including a direct injury to the jaw area, or overactivity including heavy chewing or bruxism. Bruxism occurs when someone repeatedly clenches or grinds their teeth when awake or asleep, causing structural changes to the teeth and impacting jaw function. Additionally, poor posture, neck conditions and stress can contribute to the development of TMJ pain.
In severe cases, a TMJ derangement may be experienced. This occurs when the disc structure becomes displaced, causing clunking or temporary locking of the jaw. When the jaw cannot be unlocked, this is referred to as ‘closed lock’. This painful condition often requires immediate medical attention, followed by physiotherapy to assist in recovery and restrengthening. Conversely, ‘open lock’ occurs when the jaw remains fixed in an open position, unable to be closed. This also requires immediate medical help, followed by rehabilitation at a physio.
Physiotherapy treatment can effectively reduce pain associated with a TMJ condition. The experienced, friendly team at Northern Districts Physiotherapy and Sports Clinic understand the importance of careful assessment and tailored treatments to achieve long term reduction of pain and associated symptoms.
When treating TMJ pain, it is essential that joint swelling, stiffness or weakness is identified and consequently treated. Treatment may include prescription of exercises to improve strength and mobility. Treatment for conditions such as bruxism could also involve dental assistance to protect the teeth and compression load on the TMJ.
